Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Plastic Surgery?

A: Cosmetic and reconstructive surgery forms the specialization called Plastic Surgery. The goal of these surgeries is to heal, restore or improve a patient’s physical functioning and/or appearance.

Q: How does a physician become a plastic surgeon?

A: A number of physicians are using the term "plastic" surgeon in their title but only Board Certified Plastic Surgeons have completed specialized course work and training.

Q: Why is using a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon important?

A: A surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery has a background in surgery and has completed a specialized post-graduate training course lasting five to seven years.  The final two to three years of training must be in an approved plastic surgery training center.

Q: Does Certification guarantee that the surgery will be safe and successful?

A: No, but it does guarantee your surgeon has taken the proper course work and has completed training at an approved plastic surgery training center.  The safety and probability of success will be higher with a well trained surgeon!

Q: Who is a candidate for plastic surgery?

A: Candidates should have a strong self-image, and a practical reason for pursuing the procedure. You should be looking for an improvement in physical functioning and/or appearance while knowing that a positive change may enhance your self-image but will not change people's perception of you.

Q: Is plastic surgery covered by insurance?

A: Insurance may fully or partially cover the cost of surgery when the procedure is used to restore the body’s functionality.  Insurance probably will not cover the cost when the procedure is being performed for cosmetic reasons.

Q: Can I finance my plastic surgery procedure?

A: Yes!  Most plastic surgeons offer financing or provide access to companies who do.

Q: What questions should I ask before choosing my plastic surgeon?
